Scott Davis is Lockheed Martin Aeronautics’ Country Manager for Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. Earlier in his career Scott was a Top Gun pilot and instructor.
In a recent radio interview, he mentioned how fighter pilots use their hands when describing their intricate combat flying maneuvers to each other. It reminded me of a classic photo from the 2000 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa in which, after the race, Mika Häkkinen explained to Michael Schumacher how he passed him, quite audaciously, on lap 41.
Over lunch today, Scott and I discussed this use of hands which led to our discovering many more similarities between how fighter pilots and F1 drivers prepare for, execute, and then review, while sharing the goal of achieving performance excellence.
These similarities will be covered in a future article, but for now, here is our attempt at reproducing the Häkkinen-Schumacher photo.
