Formula 1 is a truly global sport and business. Since 1950, F1 has raced in 34 countries on 77 circuits.

In 2007, when BBC World’s ‘Formula for Success’ television series was broadcast, there were 17 races on the schedule. As foreseen Episode 7, F1’s reach would grow particularly through expansion into new, emerging markets.

This year, Formula 1 scheduled 24 races on five continents in 20 countries, a season that started in February and will end in December. Two races have been postponed due to circumstances in the Middle East; but it was announced this past weekend that Bahrain will host its Grand Prix in Malaysia in October (not on the map included in this post).

Some recent F1 viewership statistics:

  • 827 million global fans

  • 1.83 billion cumulative TV viewers

  • 76 million average viewers per Grand Prix

  • 6.7 million spectators at races

  • 106+ million social media followers

  • 43% of fans under 35

  • 42% female fanbase

Several predictions about the development of F1 expressed in this penultimate episode of ‘Formula for Success’ episode have certainly come true.

Episode 7 - GLOBALISATION addresses how F1 expanded internationally after 1950; it includes a focus on Bahrain and Singapore’s interest in hosting an F1 Grand Prix; note an observation from Flavio Briatore made twenty years ago that while the USA market is difficult to enter it would be great to have a race in Las Vegas and Miami; this episode also includes a few ads for Philips Shavers who sponsored the series.
