In 1991, legendary Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher made his debut on Eddie Jordan’s F1 team.
Interviewing Jordan 13 years later in the team's motorhome at the Imola circuit, I asked, ‘How can you tell whether a young driver has what it takes to succeed in Formula 1?’
We were seated next to each other on a banquette. Jordan’s goateed face leaned in extremely close to mine, he stared into my eyes, and moved even closer saying,
‘I look into their $@#ingg eyes to see if they have the $@#ingg desire and $@#ingg stamina to succeed in this $@#ingg sport!’ I nearly fell to the floor.
Given Schumacher’s 7 Driver World Championships, Jordan must have seen something special in him. Looking into my eyes, I believe Jordan knew I was better off writing about race cars than driving them!
